Photoluminescent Sign Technology and Building Codes

New Building Codes Require PL Technology

Recent events have made the PL industry more important and relevant than ever before. After the terrorist attacks of 9/11, interviews of World Trade Center survivors revealed that low level PL lighting was a crucial factor in their successful evacuation and showed the flaws of traditional electrical evacuation methods (Many electrical signs did not work and their placement above doors could not be seen amidst the smoke). For example the same occurrence took place in Chicago at the Station Night club on February 20th 2003, where 100 people were killed because they could not see the battery powered exit signs. Low-level PL signage proved to be the only fail-safe evacuation system in New York City and saved thousands of lives on that fateful day. With this in mind, New York City passed local law 26 (NYC LL 26) in June of 2004 which mandates the use of PL markings – handrails, stair treads, demarcation lines, exit and directional signage, and obstruction markings - in all commercial buildings exceeding 75 feet. PL signs and egress systems have been installed in Government buildings including the the Capital and the Pentagon and throughout New York city. The International Building Code of the International Code Council and the National Fire Protection Association are currently reviewing this law for adoption anticipated in 2007. The states of Connecticut and New Jersey are in the final stages of adopting similar codes to retrofit all commercial and residential buildings and it is anticipated that many more states will follow. The number of buildings requiring modification is staggering and points to tremendous future growth in the PL industry.
