According to OSHA:1
Workplace fires and explosions kill 200 and injure more than 5,000 workers each year
In 1995, more than 75,000 workplace fires cost businesses more than $2.3 billion

“Emergency lighting and signage do not perform as expected at fire disasters. Very often systems are found to be non-operative, not providing useful wayguidance or both. There are two common denominators: the systems are traditionally not required to be designed for smoky conditions and they are prone to failure by lack of maintenance or complexity.”2
