Exit and emergency lighting generally refers to emergency exit signs and emergency lighting fixtures. Exit signs and emergency lights are required by local, state, and federal building codes to help insure the safety of building occupants. During emergencies exit signs an emergency lights guide patrons to the nearest outdoor exit.
Exit signs feature a red or green illuminated version of the word “EXIT” and are placed above doorways and throughout interior corridors. There are two types of exit signs, electrical and non-electrical. Electrical exit signs are ideal for retrofit projects and installations where electricity is easily available. Non-electrical exit signs are good for all types of projects because they minimize maintenance costs and have the longest lifespans of any exit sign. Photoluminescent exit signs use glow-in-the-dark technology that absorbs light and then glows when dark conditions are present. The Blade series photoluminescent exit sign is manufactured from recycled aluminum and comes with face colors of red, green, or black. Photoluminescent exit signs require five-foot candles of ambient light on the face of the sign at all times when the building is occupied. Self-luminous exit signs are non-electrical exit signs that use a glowing form of hydrogen, called tritium, to provide reliable illumination for as long as 20 years. Face colors include red, black, white, and green with frame color choices of white or black. Self-luminous exit signs can be placed outdoors, including environments where temperatures drop below 32ºF.
