Exit Emergency Sign

An exit emergency sign is also known as an emergency exit sign or simply as an exit sign. Emergency exit signs are an important safety lighting fixture required in all types of facilities in North America and the world. Emergency exit signs serve as a legible, illuminated guide to the nearest emergency exit door. During emergencies building occupants rely on exit signs to safely and effectively exit the building. Emergency exit signs are required to be installed above doors and in corridors so that at all times, no matter where you are standing, you can identify the nearest pathway towards the exit. Emergency exit signs have been used for more than 75 years and over that time the technology used to provide illumination has improved both in efficiency and longevity.

Exit signs originally featured a single incandescent bulb in a metal housing with a glass faceplate that featured the word ”EXIT” stenciled in the color red. Shortly thereafter a second bulb was added to improve visibility. Incandescent exit signs are still in use today but have widely been replaced by energy efficient LED exit signs. LED (light emitting diode) illumination technology has been in use in exit signs for more than ten years. Consuming just 1/10th the electricity of incandescent exit signs and lasting 40 times as long, LED exit signs are an affordable choice that significantly reduces operating costs.

If electricity is unavailable where you want to install an exit sign, or you are looking for a longer term solution, consider a non-electrical exit sign. Non-electrical exit signs appeared around the same time as LED exit signs and are a code compliant non-invasive solution. No electrician is needed to install these types of signs, simply surface mount the wall or hang from the ceiling. Photoluminescent exit signs use glow-in-the-dark technology to provide powerful exit face illumination with a lifespan of 25 years. Self-luminous exit signs use tritium, a naturally glowing form of hydrogen, to provide reliable illumination for up to 20 years. Photoluminescent exit signs are primarily suitable for indoors installations while self-luminous exit signs can be used both indoors and outdoors.
