An exit light can refer to two different emergency fixtures. Exit signs are signs that display an illuminated version of the word “EXIT” and help guide occupants to the outside of the building during an emergency such as a fire or earthquake. Exit signs are required to be installed above doorways and throughout corridors by local, state, and federal building codes. Emergency lights are required by the same codes for buildings that do not feature emergency power generators. Emergency lights are lighting fixtures that operate after AC power is lost and provide illumination along the path of egress. Exit signs and emergency lights work together as a system to improve building safety and occupant safety during emergencies.
There are two types of exit signs; those that use electricity and those that utilize non-electrical illumination technology. Electrical exit signs have featured incandescent lamps for more than 50 years. Recent advances in efficient lighting technology have resulted in LED (light emitting diode) light strips to become the most popular light source in electrical exit signs. LED exit signs consume between 2 and 4 watts of electricity and have an average lifespan of 8 to 10 years. Exitsigns.net manufactures over 50 models of LED exit signs, suitable for indoor and outdoor use.

Non-electrical exit signs have become popular because of their long lifespan (up to 25 years) and zero maintenance costs. Photoluminescent exit signs are the most eco-friendly type of exit sign and use industrial strength glow-in-the-dark technology for illumination. The Blade series photoluminescent exit sign is constructed from 99% recycled aluminum and has a lifespan of 25 years. Self-luminous exit signs are the most universal type of exit sign because they can be installed both indoors and outdoors. They illuminate using a glowing form of hydrogen that is totally self-reliant. If electricity is not available where you are installing your signs, choose a non-electrical exit sign and save the cost of hiring an electrician to run conduit.
