Exit Sign Battery Backup

An exit sign battery backup refers to the majority of electrical exit signs that are sold today. Battery backup exit signs use an internal battery to operate after AC power is lost. The battery constantly charges while hard wired into your electrical system and when power is lost during emergencies the battery will provide a minimum 90 minutes of illumination.

Battery backup systems have been in use for more than 50 years. Before the introduction of LED (light emitting diode) technology, exit sign battery backup systems were much larger. Conventional incandescent exit signs use more than 30 watts of power, whereas LED exit signs use less than five watts. Since the introduction of LED exit signs, battery backup systems have become much more compact and efficient.

Do not confuse battery backup exit signs with exit signs that do not require electricity. Battery powered exit signs do not exist because a battery cannot sustain illumination for more than a few hours. If you do not have electricity available at the installation site, consider installing a non-electrical exit sign. Non-electrical exit signs are an ultra energy efficient and long lasting alternative to LED exit signs.

Our most popular exit sign with battery backup is the thermoplastic EXIT series. The EXIT series is affordable and constructed from sturdy ABS thermoplastic that is flame-resistant up to 176ºF. Available in black or white, the EXIT series can be back, side, or top mounted with included hardware and installation instructions. The EXIT series comes with one backplate and two faceplates, so it can easily be configured for either single or double-sided applications.

Our self-luminous models can be installed inside and outside, including environments where temperatures drop below 32ºF.
