Exit Sign Battery

An exit sign battery refers to the internal battery inside of battery backup exit sign models. This battery is important to the functionality of the exit sign during an emergency where power is lost. Batteries are part of a battery backup system that is responsible for providing operational power to the unit for a minimum 90 minutes after power is lost. Battery backup systems evolved soon after the introduction of the exit sign. Exit signs originally did not have any type of backup and if power was lost during a fire it became much harder for occupants to find their way out of the building. The first generation of battery backup systems involved one large battery per floor that was connected to the floor’s exit signs. The battery constantly charged using a very small amount of electricity and when electricity was turned off or lost the battery would operate the exit signs, keeping them illuminated.

Over the years battery and exit sign technology has evolved. Conventional incandescent light bulbs have been replaced by energy efficient LED (light emitting diode) light strips. Using between two and four watts of electricity, LED exit signs have a lifespan of 8 to 10 years. Their long lifespan and low energy use minimizes maintenance costs and improves building safety. Since LED exit signs require a small amount of electricity the batteries that provide backup power have decreased in size. Instead of having one large battery for an entire floor of exit signs, each LED exit sign has its own individual battery backup. Testing of the battery backup is simple, just press the push-to-test button and if the sign remains illuminated then your unit is functioning properly.

We manufacture over 50 models of LED exit signs and also carry a full line of replacement batteries. Our LED exit signs are very affordable because we manufacture them ourselves and sell through our online store. Sometimes the cost of a new battery can actually be more than the cost of a whole unit. In this case it makes sense to purchase a new LED exit sign complete with a five-year warranty and clean look. If you currently have incandescent exit signs you can save about $45 per sign replaced with an LED version through reduced energy and maintenance costs.
