Photoluminescent Exit Signs
Photoluminescent exit signs are changing
the way people think about escape and safety products.
For a long time, such devices represented a constant compromise--on
the one hand, they needed to remain on all the time for
the sake of safety, but on the other, all that up-time
could amount to sky-high electric bills. New luminescent
technology has changed this landscape permanently, ushering
in a new era of one-time costs and greatly increased reliability.
What is a photoluminescent sign? Generally,
such signs use a number of chemically treated layers in
tandem to create constant light that will last for years
at a time. This isn't the glow-in-the-dark novelty plastic
so many of us played with in our youth. This is permanent
light, the kind used in Navy Seal watches and a growing
number of related military applications.
The advantages of such an approach are manifold.
Probably the biggest is the financial savings associated
with the approach. Incandescent bulbs can cost as much
as $30 per year, per sign, and even LEDs can draw considerable
power over months and years. When you take your signs
off the grid entirely, you never have to worry about those
mounting bills for each new sign.
Another important advantage is the comparative
consistency of these products. Because there is no power
source to rely upon and no battery to wear out with time,
such signs will continue to stay lit no matter what kind
of event strikes that facility. No matter whether it's
fire, flood or earthquake, you can rest easier knowing
your exit passages will remain clearly marked at all times.
